2017 OACRAO Pre-Conference Workshops

October 4, 2017, 9:30 a.m. - noon

The Transfer Experience in Ohio

Today’s transfer students arrive on our campuses with an eclectic assortment of prior learning experiences. Regardless of their background, these students face a variety of challenges as they transition between our institutions and attempt to transfer in work taken at the secondary level such as AP and CTAGs. How we prepare our institutions to welcome transfer students will ultimately help to alleviate the student frustrations that negatively impact the college experience. Join us for a workshop where you will gain knowledge on Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) initiatives "alphabet soup," focus on the benefits of Transferology, understand the importance of course applicability, and strategize for effective communication with transfer students.

Presenters: Ohio Department of Higher Education, Miami University, and Ohio Northern University colleagues

Excel Dashboards for the Casual User

No budget for specialized dashboard programs? New features in Excel 2010 and 2013 allow even casual users to create interactive dashboards that are both functional and great looking, allowing you and your end-users to explore your data in ways you have only imagined. You only need some familiarity with Pivot Tables and how to create them and we will go from there to explore more advanced options including PowerPivot, Slicers and more! It is surprisingly easy to turn out dashboards that will impress your upper administration and end-users.

Use faked data or bring your own to create dashboards which allow your academic departments/student success staff to explore the pass/fail rates of courses including looking at pre-requisites such as test scores. Set up a dashboard to allow your administration to view student demographics across majors or colleges and more.

This workshop is appropriate for colleges and universities of all sizes. The speed and ease with which you can build dashboards for your use or for others will mean an end to waiting for IR or IT to get to your project and/or allow you to explore your data before requesting what report to build. Whether you are a registrar, in admissions or just want to have fun analyzing some data, these dashboards are for you.

While recommended that you bring a laptop with Excel 2010 or 2013 installed along with the PowerPivot Add In (2013 is recommended), you can look on with others. Bring your data--census files with identifiers removed or use the provided fake data to create different types of data. It is recommended that you bring an office or college logo and college color information if your college has recommended brand colors. We will use this information to customize your dashboard to your college requirements. Your only regret will be that you didn't learn how to do this in 2010.  A workbook of screenshots walking you through the process step by step will be included to help you use what you learn.
